Hey all, not much time to write about Magic this week … but as they say, “Restrictions Breed Creativity.” With that mantra in mind, we’re trying something new: A poll!
I’ve been itching to brew a new Commander deck for the last month or so, and I’ve narrowed the potential Commanders down to two options. I’m playing neither Blue-Black or Green-White in my current decks, so I’m looking for a Commander in those color pairs. These are the choices that excite me:
Wydwen, the Biting Gale:
My Wydwen deck would operate at almost entirely instant speed, opening up a distinct playstyle that none of my current decks offer. There are barely any instants in 3/4s of my Commander decks, and while my Daxos deck plays a bunch of instants, they’re not particularly unconventional or tricky.
“Tricky” would be Wydwen’s defining characteristic. Opponents would never know whether it was safe to cast a spell or attack with a creature, and they wouldn’t see some of the oddball cards in the Wydwen deck coming. If you vote for Wydwen, you’re voting for counterspells, card draw, and unconventional card choices.
Shalai, Voice of Plenty:
Shalai would be a mana-dork deck, something not often seen in Commander due to the abundance of mass and targeted creature removal. Shalai herself shuts down targeted removal, and she also turns lowly Llanowar Elves into significant late-game beaters.
The rest of this deck would focus on protecting our mana-dorks and using them to further take advantage of Green-White’s (and Shalai’s) ability to go wide and gain value. I’m not incredibly interested in playing Green-White tokens, so think more along the lines of Duskwatch Recruiter and Tireless Tracker, rather than token generators. Sort of a Modern Abzan deck without access to Black.
I won’t tell you which choice I’m leaning toward … instead, I’ll simply get out of the way and let you vote for my next Commander!
#MTG #Commander crowd: Choose my next Commander!

You can bet that, whichever Commander you all choose, I’ll be writing about that new deck here on the blog. I’ll be back with the results and more info on the chosen deck sometime in the next month or so. In the meantime, be here in two weeks, when I dip my toes back into Modern.
P.S. – And for American readers, happy Fourth of July!
