Moving: the Gathering

Hey there…notice anything different? No, I guess you wouldn’t. But there’ve been some big changes in my life since the last time I wrote here (which will also explain why this post is a week late).

My wife and I moved from Wisconsin to California last week. Which has affected my ability to write about and play Magic justtttt a little bit.

We now live in Fresno, CA which is so very different a city from any I’ve lived in before. I’m still getting the lay of the land, and that statement includes nailing down a place to keep playing Magic. But I found a store that looks neat, and I’ve got my cards. Well, I’ve got some of my cards:

The shoutback links in that bulleted list above aren’t just gratuitous clickbait. Not this time. They’re a reminder to myself that each of those decks has a story, or really, multiple stories attached to them. By bringing these cards with me, I’ve brought those stories and the friends and opponents and places that helped shape them.

Yeah, that’s grossly sentimental and maybe a little too Yu-Gi-Oh! for some. I don’t especially care because a) this is my blog and I can do what I like and b) it’s true. I look at those decks and I see something that will continue to connect me with my friends back home and also give me a great avenue to make new friends here. At its core, this blog is about what it means to play Magic. And one of the very best parts about playing Magic is that it gives us an avenue to connect with others. That’s why my cards are here.

So wish me luck, as I hopefully head out to my very first draft in California tonight. I may win, I may lose, but either way I’ll have a story for next week.
